The Florence Griswold Museum is a special place for all ages. It is the home to one of America's most famous art colonies and the best-known center of Impressionist painting. Visitors can wander 11 acres along the Lieutenant River and enjoy a state-of-the-art gallery, an education center, a restored artist studio, a landscape center and extensive gardens, and the 1817 Griswold House.
Art, History, and Nature - all in one remarkable place
The Krieble Gallery offers changing exhibitions of art, from contemporary artists and Impressionist masters to early American portraits and textiles. The stately Georgian mansion was transformed from a wealthy sea captain’s home into a boardinghouse for some of the most noted names in American Impressionism. The Lyme Art Colony artists left their marks not only on canvas but even on the doors and wall panels of “Miss Florence’s” dining room. The room contains over 40 works by 30 artists, making it a uniquely American version of a European boardinghouse tradition. The Rafal Landscape Center features an exhibit on the history and significance of the region's landscape. In the Chadwick Studio visitors experience firsthand the working practices of American Impressionist artist William Chadwick (1879-1962). The studio is furnished and appears today as it did during his lifetime.
Family Fun!
Scavenger hunts and gallery games make the visit fun for everyone! Every Sunday from April to December, visitors are encouraged to try their hand painting plein air, in the open air, just like the Lyme Art Colony artists. Painters are given brushes, palette, paint, canvas, and a smock and are sent to paint down by the river or in Miss Florence's garden. All ages and skill levels welcome. There are also hands-on art projects, books, games and puzzles to enjoy in case of bad weather. A great way to spend the day.
Located off I-95 at exit 70, the Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10am to 5pm and Sunday 1 to 5pm. Admission is $9 for adults, $8 for seniors, $7 students, and free to children 12 and under.
