Gillette Castle Hiking Connection

For a different twist on our nature excursion, try the Gillette Castle Hiking Connection. Travel by train to the Ferry Road flagstop, where you’ll disembark and ride the Chester/Hadlyme Ferry across the Connecticut River. Explore nature up close on a 3/8-mile hike to Gillette Castle. Be sure to pack a picnic lunch!

River Valley Junction

Back at Essex Station, don’t forget to stop by our interactive museum in River Valley Junction. Go sightdoing through the Connecticut River Valley via hands-on exhibits presented by local museums and attractions. Ring the bell, toot the horn and make the engine roar in a Diesel Locomotive Replica and have fun pushing all the buttons to operate a large-scale Model Train Layout.

Essex Clipper Dinner Train

Come aboard the Essex Clipper Dinner Train, serving up delicious four-course meals Friday through Sunday in authentic 1920s Pullman luxury diners. Relax and reconnect while enjoying impeccable service and the sights of the lush Connecticut River Valley. On Fridays in July and August, a hilarious Murder Mystery Tour is the perfect option for entertainment with “lite” dinner at a “lite” price.

Special Events

Two weekends each May, pick a day to spend with everybody’s favorite engine…Thomas the Tank EngineTM! In October, get creeped out aboard the Fright Train, a scary and entertaining journey into the deep, dark night. During the holiday months, the North Pole Express gives kids an unforgettable Christmas adventure aboard a locomotive powered sleigh.
