Housed in a National Register 1878 steamboat warehouse, the Connecticut River Museum is dedicated to preserving and celebrating the natural beauty and cultural heritage of New England’s Great River. Explore 410 miles of water and 450 years of history through interactive exhibits, river cruises, special events, heritage festivals, children’s camps and more!

Dive Into History

Climb aboard a replica of Turtle, the world’s first submarine used during the American Revolutionary War. Crank the crank, pedal the pedals and strike a blow for liberty.  Experience the historic 1814 British raid on Essex when they burned our ships and destroyed our rum. Travel back to the age of steamships or take a photographic journey from the River’s source on the Canadian border to Long Island Sound .

On Water Adventure

Enjoy the cool waters and native wildlife of the Connecticut River aboard the 1906 Schooner Mary E. Afternoon and sunset cruises are offered June through October. Or get an up-close view of wintering Bald Eagles and learn their comeback story on an EagleWatch boat tour in February and March.

Experience Essex

Complete your visit in the Museum Shop offering a fine collection of maritime books, gifts and art. Stroll the Museum’s historic waterfront grounds overlooking scenic Essex Harbor and enjoy the charm and hospitality of Essex Village, an authentic New England riverport featuring other fine shops, restaurants and cultural attractions.
