The Slater Museum awakens visitors to the richness and diversity of the human experience through art and history. For over 100 years, the Museum has exhibited the best examples of fine and decorative art, representing a broad range of world cultures of the Americas, Asia, Europe and Africa.

35 Centuries of Art and History Under One Roof!

In 1886 William Albert Slater, the son of a wealthy Norwich industrialist, offered to memorialize his father, John Fox Slater, with a new building at the Norwich Free Academy.

Dedicated in 1888, the Slater Museum has continued to enrich its fine collection through purchases, gifts, and bequests. The museum houses over 150 plaster casts of Classical and Renaissance sculpture, as well as Egyptian, Ancient, African, Oceanic, American, European and Asian Art and artifacts, and Pre-Columbian and Native American objects. The Museum also holds a fine and decorative collection of art and artifacts that are distinctive to Norwich and Southeastern Connecticut history.

Come and See What’s New!

After an 18 month construction and renovation project, the Slater Museum re-opened to the public this Fall with refreshed exhibits, a new museum shop and, for the first time in its history, an elevator that provides universal accessibility to all of the museum’s exiting galleries.

The Converse Art Gallery, the Slater Museum’s changing exhibitions space, is currently showing the work of Norwich Free Academy Alumni. This is a curator’s choice exhibition that features the work of accomplished and professional artists who graduated from the Academy’s Art School.

The Slater Museum is open Tuesday through Friday from 9am to 4pm and Saturday and Sunday 1 to 4pm. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for seniors and students, and free to children 12 and under.
