Work up an appetite with a walk in the woods around Mystic, then satisfy it with a yummy snack at Starbucks, or something more substantial at Moorings in the Mystic Hilton.
Along the route:
A) Denison Homestead Museum - Explore five different periods of US history in the five main rooms of this homestead, owned by the same family since 1717.
B) Natural History Museum and Nature Center Store - Newly renovated woodland, wetland and meadow displays shows you what to look for in the sanctuary. Store has great guides, books, and gifts.
C) Mooring Restaurant, Mystic Hilton - Great for pre- or post-hiking lunches and dinners. Voted Best Hotel Dining by Connecticut Magazine. 20 Coogan Blvd., across from starting point.
D) Starbucks - Warm up with some post-hike hot chocolate, or a delicious frozen drink. 12 Coogan Blvd., across from starting point.
1. START: Park in the gravel lot just up from the intersection of Maritime Drive and Coogan Boulevard. (This is close to both Mystic Aquarium and Mystic Hilton.) Trailhead of Denison Pequotsepos Stone Bridges Trail is located towards back right of lot.
2. HIKE South along Stone Bridges Trail marked in purple.
Approx. 0.5 miles
3. TURN Right on Denison Farm Trail marked in yellow. Trail crosses and recrosses Pequotesepos Brook.
Approx. 0.25 miles
4. TRAIL joins Stone Bridges Trail, marked in purple.
Approx. 0.1 miles
5. TAKE RIGHT FORK to continue on Denison Farm Trail towards Duck Pond and Nature Center. Trail marked in yellow.
Approx. 0.1 miles
6. TAKE LEFT on Forest Loop trail, marked in red, towards Duck Pond and Nature Center.
Approx. 0.1 miles
Optional: Take RIGHT on Forest Loop trail, marked in red, for a longer loop that ends with Council Rock and Nature Center.
Approx. 0.3 miles
7. PASS NATURE CENTER on right and CONTINUE Northwest on Denison Farm Trail, marked in yellow.
Approx. 0.1 miles
8. TURN RIGHT to return on Stone Bridges Trail, marked in Purple.
Approx. 0.5 miles
9. RETURN TO parking lot.
