Description
The United States Coast Guard Band welcomes the winners of its annual Young Artist Competition on Sunday, June 3 at 2 p.m. in Leamy Concert Hall. Three band members also take the stage as guest conductors in this captivating performance. The spotlight is on oboist Kaitlin Pet, who performs “Variations on a Theme of Glinka” by Rimsky-Korsakov and Samantha Lake performing Don Haddad’s “Suite for Tuba.” Chief Musician Brooke Allen and Musician First Class Noel Marcano lead the band in works by Richard Wagner and the endearing Percy Grainger. Musician First Class Sean Nelson leads the band in his own work “Extinction” which features an extended solo flourish by clarinetist Musician First Class Cedric Mayfield. Assistant Director, CWO 3 Richard Wyman conducts Gustav Holst’s “Hammersmith: Prelude and Scherzo”, then Soprano Soloist Musician First Class Megan Weikleenget sings the stalwart anthem “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” to close the program.
